“As I walked out of the dunes on Shackleford Banks one afternoon after a big tide and a stormy week, I was greeted with this wonderful view. The tidewater had cut an intricate pattern of drainage toward the inlet. I positioned myself to enjoy this natural visual appetizer offered to me. This arrangement especially enhanced the Cape Lookout lighthouse’s position of dominance over the surrounding sand dunes. Yet I had painted such scenes before and I felt the need to bring uniqueness to this natural beauty. Oops, there it was - my Labrador Retriever & his black shiny presence; what energy and vitality to contrast such a calm and serene scene. I called to him before he “splashed” the “stillness”, for a last look. His attention was captured momentarily yet his will to follow his “chocolate” friend prevailed. If you have labs you know they are “controlled” by their sense of smell, constant movement, and love of the water. So guess where they proceeded? The tidewater had also uncovered the hidden remains of a wooden ship, sometime long ago wrecked on this shifting sand. It’s appearance added a sense of intrigue and brevity to the newly “ landscaped” scene”. -Alan Cheek |
